Gay Pride: June 2016






Gay pride events are happening right around the UK this summer, and we’ve picked out some of the biggest and best.

June 2016


Oxford Pride starts us off on Saturday, June 4th, and Sunday, June 5th, and there's plenty going on including live music and morris dancing. There's a parade, too, and we're reliably informed that the best spot for a good view is Bonn Square.

London Pride is the big one with celebrations running from June 10th to June 26th and culminating with the main pride weekend on June 25th-26th. Events include bike rides, exhibitions, walking tours, talks, and workshops. Find out more about the Pride Festival by clicking here.

There's the famous parade, too, on the 25th and if you're in Zone 1, then you can't miss it. Starting at 1pm, the parade will head toward Westminster. Find the route map and more information by clicking here.

 June 11th for Blackpool Pride and this event seems to get bigger and brighter each year. You can watch the parade leave from South Pier at 11am with the promise of colourful floats, lots of flags and noise, and thousands of spectators cheering it all on. Expect music during the day, entertainment and sunshine vibes followed by a varied evening line up. 






Coventry Pride is June 18 and 19th featuring a wealth of things to see and do: stilt walkers, live music, street food, a poetry slam and a cabaret show to name a few. Don't miss the "walk for pride" parade, either. It leaves from the cathedral ruins. Check out the website for further information about the after-parties, too.

York Pride kicks off on Saturday 18th June with star host Christopher Biggins. There’s a pride parade from York Minster followed by a full day of entertainment at the Knavesmire. Expect music from Lloyd Daniels, Jake Quickenden, Angie Brown and Beth McCarthy.

Head to Portsmouth Pride on Saturday 18th June, because it definitely has something for all musical tastes: pop, a 90s cover band, acoustic, dance, cabaret and more. Doors open at 1pm on Southsea Common. There’s also a colourful parade, too, ending at Southsea at 1.30.

And last, but not least...


On Sunday, June 26th, is UK Black Pride Taking place in London’s Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, UK Black Pride celebrates the African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean heritage lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and trans- communities. The event is free and definitely has a festival vibe – live music and a giant picnic. What better way of sitting in the sunshine on a Sunday afternoon?

Wedding traditions remain an important component of many gay and most straight wedding ceremonies. So who walks down the aisle at a gay wedding?   The short answer?  Whoever you want. What you choose to do and celebrate within your own wedding should be entirely up to you and your partner. Fair or fayre? We got busted by a simple Google search.  And we owe you an apology. After writing hundreds of posts promoting wedding open days , showcases and exhibitions , we assumed that we had wedding terminology down-pat. It turns out that we didn’t. Gay Wedding Hashtags

Creating a wedding hashtag for a ceremony and reception isn’t every couple’s cup of tea but is it really so ridiculous when most of us use social media to document and organise our lives anyway.  Gay wedding hashtags are one example of how same-sex couples are creating new traditions.  Planning a wedding when you’re LGBTQ often means navigating heterosexual customs and gender-based norms.  This is one way that couples (gay or otherwise) can embrace modernity and add a bit of fun to their ceremony and reception.
