Peru Must Recognise Overseas Same-Sex Marriages




A court in Peru has ruled that the country must recognise same-sex marriages formed overseas.

Peruvian national Oscar Ugarteche Galarza married his same-sex partner in Mexico City in 2010 but was unable to register his marital status on his passport because gay marriage is not recognised in Peru.

He decided to take legal action.

The Marilyn Stowe blog reported that judges presiding over the case had said that there was “a great part of society speaking out for the legal equality of homosexual couples” and that the “administration of justice has to be interpreted on the basis of changes to and the needs of our society”

The decision is likely to be appealed.

Wedding traditions remain an important component of many gay and most straight wedding ceremonies. So who walks down the aisle at a gay wedding?   The short answer?  Whoever you want. What you choose to do and celebrate within your own wedding should be entirely up to you and your partner. Creating a wedding hashtag for a ceremony and reception isn’t every couple’s cup of tea but is it really so ridiculous when most of us use social media to document and organise our lives anyway.  Gay wedding hashtags are one example of how same-sex couples are creating new traditions.  Planning a wedding when you’re LGBTQ often means navigating heterosexual customs and gender-based norms.  This is one way that couples (gay or otherwise) can embrace modernity and add a bit of fun to their ceremony and reception.
